Eswatini Media Stakeholders Visit South African to Enhance Media Self-regulation
MBABANE – A high-profile delegation of Eswatini’s media stakeholders, including Mbongeni Mbingo, Chairperson of the Editor’s Forum, Ntombi Mhlongo, Secretary-General of the Eswatini National Association of Journalists, Bongani Mkhaliphi, Senior Information Officer of the Media and Information Development Directorate, and MP Charles Ndlovu, Chairperson of the Ministry of ICT House of Assembly Portfolio Committee, has returned from an insightful familiarization tour in South Africa. This initiative was organized and funded by the US Embassy as part of a broader commitment to promoting media independence and press freedom in Eswatini.
During the tour, the delegation explored various South African media self-regulatory organizations, including the esteemed South African Press Council. This engagement is a pivotal step towards the establishment of a similar self-regulatory framework in Eswatini, which is crucial for upholding journalistic standards and ethical reporting.
“The insights we gained are invaluable. We are eager to leverage this experience to champion the importance of self-regulation in our media landscape,” stated Mbongeni Mbingo. This educational journey is timely, as the delegates are set to lead discussions on the significance of media self-regulation at the upcoming World Press Freedom Day celebrations in Eswatini.
The US Embassy expressed its support, stating, “We are proud to assist Eswatini’s key media figures in understanding and developing media self-regulation standards. This is fundamental to our support for press freedom and independence in the region.”
As Eswatini’s media landscape continues to evolve, the establishment of a self-regulatory body is expected to enhance journalistic integrity and public trust. This initiative also aligns with the Global Charter of Ethics for Journalists, which underscores the necessity for press freedom and the ethical gathering and dissemination of news.
The success of this tour marks a significant milestone in Eswatini’s journey towards media reform and highlights the collaborative efforts between Eswatini and international partners to foster a more transparent and accountable media environment.
