The Swaziland Action Group Against Abuse (SWAGAA) has revealed startling statistics regarding abuse cases reported through its toll-free helpline, 951, during the first three months of 2024. According to SWAGAA’s Executive Director, Nonhlanhla Dlamini, a total of 993 abuse cases were reported from January to March, shedding light on the prevalence of various forms of abuse within the community.
Emotional abuse emerged as the most commonly reported type of abuse, with a staggering 619 cases reported during the three-month period. Following closely behind was financial abuse, with 208 cases reported, highlighting the multifaceted nature of abuse experienced by individuals across the nation.
Dlamini emphasized the concerning trend, stating that out of the 342 abuse cases reported in January alone, 255 were incidents of emotional abuse. This underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and intervention to address the pervasive issue of emotional abuse within households and communities.
The breakdown of abuse cases reported to SWAGAA from January to March is as follows:
- Emotional Abuse: 619 cases
- Financial Abuse: 208 cases
- Physical Abuse: 92 cases
- Neglect: 38 cases
- Sexual Abuse: 36 cases
These statistics shed light on the alarming prevalence of abuse in various forms and serve as a reminder of the importance of organizations like SWAGAA in providing support, advocacy, and resources for individuals affected by abuse. As SWAGAA continues its mission to combat abuse and promote healing and empowerment, it calls for greater community awareness and collective action to address this critical issue.
