MBABANE, Eswatini – Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini unveiled the Eswatini Nursing Leadership Initiative, marking a significant stride in healthcare advancement for the kingdom. Supported by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the program is part of a concerted effort in seven African countries to sustain and bolster the fight against HIV/AIDS, aiming to eradicate the disease as a public health threat by 2030.
The initiative in Eswatini will concentrate on three key areas: enhancing the leadership capabilities of nurses, boosting frontline nurses’ ability to tackle public health emergencies, and promoting wellness at work. This move aligns with the government’s commitment to improving health services as voiced by citizens during the last Sibaya—a traditional public forum where national issues are discussed.
“Quality healthcare is not just fundamental, but it is a right,” stated the Prime Minister. “This initiative echoes our administration’s dedication to responding to health challenges highlighted by emaSwati, reinforcing our pursuit of the 959595 target by the year 2030.”
The 959595 target refers to the ambitious global health strategy aiming for 95% of all people living with HIV to know their HIV status, 95% of all people diagnosed with HIV to receive sustained antiretroviral therapy, and 95% of all people receiving antiretroviral therapy to achieve viral suppression.

“This launch is a testament to our commitment to empowering our nurses, who are the cornerstone of our health sector,” PM Dlamini emphasized. “The Nursing Leadership Initiative will not only fortify their role in combating HIV/AIDS but will also elevate the overall standard of healthcare delivery across the Kingdom.”
Acknowledging the critical role that nurses play in health service delivery, the Prime Minister lauded their resilience and dedication. Through this initiative, the government aims to support nurses in their pivotal role and ensure optimal performance in patient care.
The Eswatini Nursing Leadership Initiative is set to enhance the capabilities of the nursing workforce, positioning them to lead the charge in improving healthcare outcomes and driving Eswatini towards a future free from the scourge of HIV/AIDS.
