Limkokwing University lecturers have taken a stand by putting down their tools in the midst of ongoing examinations, signaling a significant disruption to the academic process. The move follows a series of unresolved grievances with the institution’s management, prompting the lecturers to escalate their demands for better working conditions.
Last week, the lecturers presented a comprehensive list of 10 demands to the university management, citing various issues affecting their welfare and professional fulfillment. However, despite the submission of these demands, the management failed to take adequate steps to address the concerns raised, leading to a deadlock in negotiations.
In a bid to facilitate resolution, the Minister of Education intervened, advocating for dialogue and compromise between the two parties. As a result, the demands were meticulously reviewed and narrowed down to five critical areas that require immediate attention.
The five key demands highlighted by the lecturers include:
- Salary Review: Lecturers are advocating for a comprehensive review of their salaries to ensure that they are commensurate with their qualifications, experience, and the cost of living.
- Cost of Living Adjustments: With the rising cost of living, lecturers are calling for adjustments to their compensation packages to reflect current economic realities and alleviate financial strain.
- Contracts for Lecturers: Lecturers are seeking the assurance of stable employment through the provision of formal contracts outlining their terms of service and job security.
- Payment of Overtime: Lecturers are demanding fair compensation for any additional hours worked beyond their standard duties, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and remunerating extra effort.
- Notching According to Performance: Lecturers are advocating for a merit-based system of career progression, where advancements are based on performance evaluations and achievements rather than arbitrary criteria.
The decision to down tools underscores the lecturers’ resolve to press for meaningful change and improvement in their working conditions. By taking collective action, they aim to compel the university management to prioritize their concerns and engage in constructive dialogue to find mutually beneficial solutions.
The impact of the lecturers’ strike on the institution’s operations and the academic calendar remains to be seen, but it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing issues of fair treatment, remuneration, and job security within the education sector. As stakeholders navigate this challenging period, the hope is that meaningful dialogue and compromise will pave the way for a resolution that benefits all parties involved.
