Andile Shabangu, the man seen in a video assaulting protesting Nkhaba students has since come out to apologize for his actions.
Emaswati woke up on Saturday to a trending video of a male who was assaulting protesting Nkhaba High school students. The reason nor the relationship between this man and the assaulted student was not clear at that time.
After a series of investigations, the publication uncovered that one Andile Shabangu was liked to be the man assaulting the student. A questionnaire was sent to him via WhatsApp to confirm if indeed he is the man captured on the video.
Shabangu apologized for his actions arguing that he did that out of anger after the students had pelted stones towards him and three other people that were present at the scene.
“Maswati, I would like to take this opportunity and apologies for assaulting students which have since been witnessed on a trending video on Social Media platforms particularly on Facebook.
“I would like to issue my sincere apology. No child deserves to be beaten, it’s just that we reacted with anger after being pelted with stones. We were not acting on someone’s instructions and we are certainly aware of what they were protesting for,” said Shabangu.
He narrated that the incident took place when he was on his way to ferry pre-school students when he encountered protesting students who have since blocked the main road. Shabangu said he tried to engage the students to remove the stones and the fire that they had used to block the road but proved to be futile.
He said three more people arrived and tried to engage the students but they responded by pelting stones towards the direction of four of them.
He said it was then that they used sticks to scare and remove them from the road that they had blocked some he said he now regret it.
