In a significant move towards sustainable waste management, Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Jane Mkhonta-Simelane, today handed over a mini-truck valued at E277,000 to the Journey Multipurpose Cooperative in KaShali, Manzini.

Funded through the Eswatini Environment Fund, the mini-truck will play a pivotal role in the KaShali General Waste Management Project by facilitating the transportation of non-recyclable waste within the community.

Expressing her commitment to waste reduction, Minister Mkhonta-Simelane emphasized the importance of community involvement in waste management initiatives. She highlighted the cooperative’s role in serving 221 homesteads and noted that with the addition of the new mini-truck, they would extend their reach to an additional 150 homesteads. This expansion, she stressed, would lead to a reduction in waste, particularly non-biodegradable items like diapers, thereby contributing to a cleaner environment.

“Our agenda is to eliminate waste in all communities across the country,” Minister Mkhonta-Simelane stated. “This initiative exemplifies positive change and underscores our commitment to sustainable waste management practices.”

Highlighting the broader environmental implications, Minister Mkhonta-Simelane underscored the importance of addressing waste management as part of the country’s efforts to achieve net-zero emissions to greenhouse gases. She urged households in KaShali, particularly landlords, to support the cooperative’s noble initiative and actively participate in sustainable waste management practices.

As Eswatini strives towards environmental sustainability, initiatives like the KaShali General Waste Management Project demonstrate the government’s dedication to fostering community-led solutions and building a cleaner, greener future for all citizens.
