Mbabane – Tanele Maseko, the widow of murdered human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko, has reportedly been left traumatised after being called in by the police upon her arrival in the country on Wednesday. According to her lawyer, Mzwandile Masuku, Maseko, who was returning home from South Africa with her children, was summoned by the police at Ngwenya Border Post.
Following the initial questioning, Maseko was instructed to report to the Manzini Regional Police Headquarters the following morning, prompting her legal team to demand their presence during the interrogation. As a result, Maseko’s phone was confiscated, exacerbating the distress experienced by her and her family.
Masuku described the ordeal as draining, particularly for Maseko’s children, emphasizing that the lack of progress in investigating Thulani Maseko’s murder has only added to the family’s anguish. He criticized the alleged harassment by the police, asserting that it has caused significant distress to the widow.
Furthermore, Masuku expressed concern over the confiscation of Maseko’s phone, highlighting that it isolates her from communication with the outside world, as visitors are the only means of contact permitted. He also denounced the police’s insistence on questioning Maseko without legal representation, describing it as intimidating and unfair.
In response to the situation, Deputy Police Information and Communications Officer Nosipho Mnguni stated that the police are anticipating today’s meeting with Maseko, suggesting that the matter is still ongoing.
The unfolding events surrounding Tanele Maseko’s interrogation have sparked renewed concerns over the handling of Thulani Maseko’s murder investigation, with many calling for transparency and accountability from the authorities.
