The United Nations (UN) says they will continue working with regional and international organizations as well as development partners to engage the Eswatini Government and all stakeholders to support a peaceful resolution of the current tensions.
The UN Eswatini released a statement on Thursday raising concern on the current civil unrests faced by the Kingdom of Eswatini.
“The United Nations in Eswatini is particular concerned by the latest development in the country, with the involvement of the youth and school children, public transport worker, in the protests. The United Nations in Eswatini has noted with concerns scenes of children taking to the streets to air their gradiences of various nature; the burning of schools and school equipments in different parts of the Kingdom of Eswatini; the violent reaction of some elements of the country’s security forces that has resulted in; reportedly, the arrest and injuries sustained by unarmed civilians, including children,” read the statement.
The organization reminded all parties that the right to education is one of the most important rights that shapes the future of the nation. They said pupils must be assured that schools are safe sanctuaries for learners and developmental growth. They said it is for that reason that the UN encourage all parties to ensure that the safe and unimpeded return of learners and teachers to places of learning.
The United Nation also reminded the Eswatini Government of it obligations under the law and several conventions including the 2012 Children’s protection and welfare Act.
The UN also called on all stakeholders including the Eswatini government, political activists, and learners as well as several protesters to exercise utmost restrain and restore an environment that is conducive for “Emaswati-led and Emaswati-owned dialogue”.
