The Eswatini Competition Commission (ECC) has urged consumers to be vigilant and report any unfair price increase.

ECC Chief Executive Officer Muzi Dlamini released a statement on Friday where he express that the Competition Commission has been keeping abreast of the evolving impact of COVID-19 on demand and price increase of certain products within specific sectors of the economy.

“The Commission note the generals panic that arises in times of uncertainty that is expected given the possibility of supply constrains as our trading partners tighten their boarders to try and contain the spread of corona virus,” read the statement.

Dlamini noted the rise of COVID-19 cases which he said indicates that the second wave has hit the country something that comes with implications to businesses and consumers.

He reminded businesses that unfair trading conduct related to excessive pricing as well as other unlawful practices are prohibited in line with the COVID-19 regulations.

Dlamini said companies should be mindful of the existing laws in the country before implementing any price increases.

“Although there may be valid reasons for price increases to be implemented, such as the results to rise in input costs, companies should remain mindful of the COVID-19 regulations and the Competition Act, 2007 and the Fair Trading Act, 2001, which clearly prohibits unfair, misleading and generally unconscionable conduct in relation to consumers,”  detailed the Dlamini.

Dlamini then urged the consumers to remain vigilant and report to the commission all unfair practices and price increases.
