Eswatini’s MTN Mobile Money is the fifth biggest across the 23 operations of MTN, Sam Shongwe, the MTN FinTech Chief Operation Officer revealed on Wednesday during the launch of an E200 000 worth of partnership between MTN Fintech and the Royal Science Technology Park (RSTP).
The E200 000 pumped in by MTN Fintech will go towards technical support, marketing support and invention and innovators awards where top three winners will be awarded with cash prizes.
Speaking during the launch of this partnership, Shongwe urged Innovators to take advantage and explore the huge MTN Mobile Money ecosystem. Currently, Mobile Money has over 700 000 registered customers and is still growing.
He expressed that MTN MoMo has grown into an MTN flagship product since its launch back in 2011 adding that about E1.1 Billion now circulates on Mobile Money across all transactions on a monthly basis.
“This demonstrates how much the platform has grown. While MTN MoMo has grown massively, we still register over 3 500 new subscribers per month. On a regional space, Eswatini’s MTN MoMo is the fifth biggest player across the 23 operations of MTN,” articulated Shongwe.
According to MTN Chief Executive Officer Wandile Mtshali, MTN Mobile Money in the country has over 2 000 merchants/shops that accept Mobile Money payments and over 10 000 Mobile Money agents across the country.
