In a significant development for the town of Pigg’s Peak, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade, Manqoba Khumalo, has officially opened the new Spar and Tops stores, marking a milestone in local economic development. The inauguration event also served as a platform for the Minister to announce the construction of a state-of-the-art textile factory, further bolstering Pigg’s Peak’s economic landscape.

During the opening ceremony, Minister Khumalo highlighted the immediate benefits brought by Spar and Tops to the community. “I am proud to announce that Spar and Tops have already made a positive impact on this community of Pigg’s Peak. Through their establishment, they have created numerous employment opportunities,” stated Minister Khumalo. He detailed that the stores have employed 82 full-time staff, comprising 30 males and 52 females, emphasizing the government’s commitment to gender equality and diversity in employment.

Minister Khumalo also discussed future growth prospects linked to the new establishments. “As we celebrate the opening of Pigg’s Peak Spar and Tops, it is vital to recognize that this is just the beginning of a promising journey,” he said. He revealed plans to empower local businesses, particularly vegetable farmers, by developing strategic partnerships to supply Spar with fresh, locally sourced produce. This initiative aims to support the agricultural sector while promoting sustainable practices and reducing the carbon footprint.

The most significant announcement of the day was the planned textile factory, which is set to transform Pigg’s Peak’s industrial sector. “As part of the growth of this already vibrant town, a new textile factory has been commissioned to be built in Pigg’s Peak. Construction is set to commence in the current financial year and once the project is complete, the factory will employ 500 people,” announced Minister Khumalo. This new factory is expected to provide a major boost to the local economy, offering new jobs and fostering further industrial development.
