Strengthening Eswatini’s Cyber Defences: A Collaborative Initiative

In a bold move to fortify the nation’s digital infrastructure, the Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM) and the Ministry of ICT, Department of Communications, have joined forces to develop critical guidelines for addressing computer crime and cybercrime. The initiative, launched during a three-day session, marks a significant step towards bolstering cybersecurity measures in Eswatini.

A Multi-Agency Task Team Takes Charge

A diverse task team, representing key institutions—including law enforcement, the judiciary, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)’s office, the Attorney General’s Office, the Anti-Corruption Commission, the Royal Eswatini Police Service, and the Royal Science and Technology Park—gathered to kick off the project. This unified effort is designed to create comprehensive guidelines that will enhance the country’s ability to respond to, manage, and investigate cybercrime, in full alignment with the provisions of the Computer Crime and Cybercrime Act, 2022.

Expert Facilitation and Robust Training

The session was led by ESCCOM, with Advocate Jacqueline Fick of Vizstratsolutions playing a key facilitative role. Under her guidance, the team delved into the complex realm of cyber law and digital forensics, working diligently to outline robust measures that cater to the evolving nature of cyber threats. A notable feature of the project is the planned training program aimed at law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and members of the judiciary. This training will cover both the legal framework and practical techniques required for effective digital evidence handling—ensuring that stakeholders are well-prepared to tackle cyber incidents head-on.
