Ingwenyama Cup Readies for SuperSport Broadcast and Stadium Upgrades

The prestigious SMVAF Ingwenyama Cup is set to captivate football enthusiasts as SuperSport, the pay-per-view TV channel, gears up to partner once again for the live broadcast of this year’s edition. This collaboration aims to showcase local talent on an international stage, providing a platform for exposure to scouts from around the world.

Nkosilenhle Masuku, the Public Relations Officer for Ingwenyama Cup, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Sports, Culture, and Youth Affairs for granting them access to the Somhlolo National Stadium, a venue steeped in the cup’s rich history of memorable football moments.

Masuku highlighted the cup’s former glory when it garnered millions of viewers across Africa and beyond, becoming a significant footballing event on the continent. He emphasized the desire of the SMVAF Ingwenyama Cup to reignite this legacy, especially after the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

“As we all know that this cup was at its peak in the African continent when it was viewed by millions of people from the region and abroad, it is our wish as SMVAF Ingwenyama Cup to take it back to where it belongs,” Masuku remarked.

SuperSport has been a key broadcaster of the national tournament since its inception in 2015, providing a valuable platform for local football to reach a broader audience. The upcoming edition promises not only thrilling matches but also the chance for locals to interact with renowned SuperSport presenters, including local legend William “Cool Cat” Shongwe.

The tournament, inaugurated in September 2015, has seen Mbabane Swallows secure victory three times. Young Buffaloes claimed the fourth edition, while Green Mamba emerged victorious in the last outing.

In the midst of the tournament preparations, Masuku addressed logistical aspects, mentioning the ongoing construction at the stadium. He highlighted the introduction of a single gate for all teams until construction is complete, with additional measures like CCTV cameras for accurate headcounts.

A stern warning was issued against teams contemplating the use of mystical practices (“muti”) during the tournament, emphasizing the need to preserve the stadium’s integrity as it undergoes construction. Both Masuku and tournament officials urged teams to prioritize fair play and uphold the spirit of the game.

The Ingwenyama Cup continues to blend cultural richness with football, creating a distinctive event that resonates with fans not only in Eswatini but also across the African continent.
