Teachers and support staff at Baha’i High School have returned to their posts after receiving their long-awaited salaries, putting an end to a recent strike prompted by payment delays. Last week, the frustrated employees took to the streets, marching to the Ministry of Education to seek intervention in the matter.
According to Schools Manager, Lungelo Nhlengethwa, salaries were disbursed to the staff members just before the Easter weekend, marking a resolution to the financial standoff. While the payment has brought relief to some, concerns remain regarding its universality among all employees.
One teacher, who requested anonymity, confirmed the receipt of their salary but expressed uncertainty about whether the same was true for all staff members.
The ministry’s involvement in addressing the issue came after Baha’i teachers submitted a petition to government offices, outlining their grievances and urging action. Among their demands was the dissolution of the current school board, which includes two non-parent members, and the dismissal of the current supervisor accused of mistreating contract teachers and expatriates.
Nhlengethwa acknowledged the ministry’s attention to the matter and indicated that they are awaiting directives from the Principal Secretary (PS) for a scheduled meeting with stakeholders from the school. However, the timing of this meeting remains uncertain due to the commencement of lessons, which has hindered the possibility of immediate collective discussions.
As the school community navigates these administrative challenges, the resolution of the salary dispute marks a step towards restoring normalcy and stability within Baha’i High School.
