Big Changes for Small Communities: MTN Eswatini’s Y’ello Care Initiative Transforms Access to Luhlanyeni Primary School

Sthobelweni, Eswatini — Under the banner of this year’s inspiring theme “Connecting at the Roots,” MTN Eswatini’s 2024 Y’ello Care campaign continues to deliver tangible impact—this time, with a powerful transformation in Sthobelweni.

In a joint effort with the Ministry of Public Works & Transport, the CEO’s Office Y’ello Care Team led an infrastructural intervention to improve access to Luhlanyeni Primary School, a vital community institution serving 123 learners, educators, and staff.

The major milestone of the day: re-graveling a 6.3km stretch of rural road leading from the Sphofaneni main road to the school. This once-troublesome route, plagued by slippery surfaces due to high plasticity index soil, has been revitalized with critical rock-filling, drainage improvements, and the creation of safer crossings—ensuring reliable and secure access regardless of the season.

“Access to education starts with physical access. If learners and teachers can’t get to school safely, everything else is compromised. Today’s work is about removing that barrier,” said a representative from MTN Eswatini’s Y’ello Care team.

The impact went beyond roads.

Water Security: In partnership with the Ministry, the team ensured that all of Luhlanyeni Primary’s water tanks were refilled, supporting the school’s daily hygiene and hydration needs—an essential aspect of a safe learning environment.

Sporting Spirit: The Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) added a special touch by donating five soccer balls, helping to promote active play, teamwork, and morale among the young learners.

STEM Empowerment: The school also received a science kit, part of a broader initiative that has seen 20 schools across the country benefit from MTN’s Y’ello Care campaign. These kits are designed to spark curiosity and foster a hands-on approach to learning science at the primary level.

Building Futures at the Grassroots

Now in its 21st year, the 21 Days of Y’ello Care campaign underscores MTN’s commitment to social impact through sustainable community development. This year’s theme is more than symbolic—it drives home the importance of grassroots connectivity through partnerships that yield real outcomes.

From infrastructure to education, sport to sanitation, the message is clear: doing for tomorrow, today.
