With uncertainties on whether or not the country will host the annual Buganu Ceremony, the Ministry of Health has advised against hosting this event and others that may draw large numbers of people.
The Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health Dr. Simon Zwane advised that the country should stick to the precaution set by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the second wave is deadlier.
In an article carried by the Times of Eswatini Sunday, the Principal Secretary was quoted saying the festival attracts a large number of people and therefore, the Ministry hopes that the COVID-19 Regulations could apply.
“We all know that, for obvious reasons, possibilities are high that COVID-19 infections spread easier during gatherings. The ministry has observed several incidents where gatherings have become the main source people getting infected with the virus. With the issue of marula, and because of reports alleging that most people were now enjoying the marula brew, I hope the law enforcement agencies would assist government to bring to book all defaulters,” said Zwane as quoted by Times of Eswatini.
Meanwhile, Communication Officer at the Ministry of Home Affairs was reported to have said that is it still too early for the Ministry to discuss or make decisions on the Marula Festival pointing out that Their Majesties are still in seclusion. He said the Home Affairs Ministry will issue a statement when the time is right.
The Marula Festival is an annual Festival in which the Kingdom of Eswatini celebrates the harvest of the Marula Fruits and is observed by their Majesties.
Last year, the Buhleni Buganu Festival was held from February 7 until 9 while Hlane Buganu Festival was held from March 1 to 3.
