The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, expressed satisfaction with the arrest, emphasizing the success of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking. The arrest occurred during New Year’s Eve crime prevention duties when a bakkie with a trailer was subjected to a routine vehicle checkpoint in Kimberley.
Upon inspection, members of the South African Police Service discovered four large crates on the trailer containing a substantial quantity of dagga. The Provincial Organised Crime Unit has initiated an investigation into the illegal dealing of drugs, leading to the arrest of the 47-year-old driver from Eswatini.
A significant amount of 663.35kg of dagga, valued at E1.4 million, was seized during the operation. In addition to the drugs, the bakkie, estimated at R400,000, and the trailer, valued at around R45,000, were also confiscated.
The suspect is expected to make a court appearance soon, facing charges related to drug possession and trafficking. The arrest and confiscation are part of a broader effort to keep illicit substances off the streets and combat drug-related crimes.
