The Eswatini National Agricultural Marketing Board (NAMBOARD) recently welcomed the executive management team of Shoprite, along with local press representatives, for an exclusive tour of their Export Packhouse located at Encabeni. The visit provided a firsthand glimpse into NAMBOARD’s operations and underscored the fruitful partnership between the two entities.

Fostering Economic Growth through Partnerships

Since January 2024, NAMBOARD has been making significant strides in the export market, with a total of 492 tonnes of produce valued at E4.5 million purchased by Shoprite through its subsidiary, Freshmark. This robust collaboration has not only bolstered the local agricultural sector but also contributed to the country’s economic growth.

Diverse Range of Commodities

The commodities produced by local farmers and supplied to Shoprite encompass a diverse range, including butternut, tomato, beetroot, green pepper, baby marrow, cabbage, green beans, and onion. This broad assortment reflects the rich agricultural landscape of Eswatini and highlights the quality and variety of produce available for both domestic and international markets.

Export Successes

Notably, approximately 10 tonnes of this locally sourced produce have been exported, with baby marrow emerging as the most sought-after commodity in export markets. This achievement underscores the growing demand for Eswatini’s agricultural products on the global stage and underscores the country’s potential as a key player in the international trade arena.

Empowering Local Farmers

Through NAMBOARD’s logistics support, an additional 16 tonnes of citrus fruits and mangoes have been sold directly by farmers to Shoprite, further empowering local producers and fostering a direct link between farmers and consumers. This initiative not only enhances market access for farmers but also promotes sustainability and inclusivity within the agricultural value chain.

Looking Ahead

As NAMBOARD continues to expand its footprint in the export market and strengthen its partnerships with key stakeholders like Shoprite, the future looks promising for Eswatini’s agricultural sector. By leveraging its strategic collaborations and harnessing the potential of its vibrant farming community, the country is poised to achieve greater economic prosperity and sustainable development.
